Just a painting I did today, of a sunrise I sketched on a road trip last year, somewhere in Iowa.
From memory and a sketch.
Watercolor on paper…with a little oil paint on top.

Spent yesterday cleaning up the down branches and found tons of live lichen to process and photograph for sale. (here’s a post about what to use these for, if you’re confused!)
A lot of people don’t live in the wettest state on earth, and so they don’t have access to this stuff for terrariums and the like- after the recent high winds, a lot of high-branch lichen species came down to the ground, so I got to collect much more variety than my usual specimens have-
Taking photographs of lichen fascinates me. At the Easton Cemetery in PA, I got a lot of really good photographs of rock lichen, which can take centuries to grow, on the oldest gravestones there. The lichen down here are PNW wood-growth lichens, which build up on the douglas firs. I have a few wardian cases full of the more unusual kinds, and taking good pictures of these is a challenge because the color and shades and tiny tiny textures are all very pale and soft.
More photos after the break.

This morning, at John Boy’s, a man walking in overheard my conversation with the cashier-”so the road is gone?” I asked. She replied, “yes, 34 is a landslide! but the alsea falls is open, but there are trees down.” The man walking by said, ”Yes, the terrible loggers- the terrible loggers will clear that road.”
Twelve miles west of town, the road is gone. Four miles east- the road is gone. There is a side road, over the falls, covered in downed trees. The last few days have been interesting here.
“ORE34, 4 miles East of Alsea

The first night, I thought it was going to snow. As the sun set, the fog settled in, and the first flakes came. I knew we were in for it, in a way I’d been waiting for it. By nine pm, the woods around the house were creaking, groaning, and shattering under the weight. It sounded like a gun battle. I thought, at first, that maybe the zombies had come- or that some neighbors were having a shotgun party. I got my revolver out, and slept.
In the morning, the snow was thick. Everywhere I looked giant limbs were lying in it. The trees had taken a beating, and a few of the deciduous trees were broken almost in half. The doug firs that shelter my back yard had lost a lot of branches- many of them on my roof. I went into Alsea, and the store had no power. My house had no power. My car slipped in the snow- then it began to rain.
It’s still raining now- not the torrent it was that day, but the usual Oregon dribble. The rain at first though was heady- huge drops, constant. When I first moved to Alsea the water was high, but now it was raging. In Corvallis the roads had flooded, and a friend of mine living in Monroe area said they were pretty much cut off by the flooding.
This morning they declared the county a disaster area.
In my town, there’s lots of washouts. The road right by my house is about ten inches deep in places. There are tree branches all over the place, and you can see where people woke early and got out their chainsaws to clean up a bit.
Since I am stranded here, for the time being, with the roads gone, I think I’ll probably do some art- at least until the sun goes down. The power has been on and off the last few days, so I’m hoping it stays running through tonight.
I’ll post more as events unfold. Here’s the rest of the photos I took today, and a few from friends in nearby towns.
I’m going to post as many photos as I can find from locals, check back later as I will update here in this post. Click through for the rest.

I am totally against SOPA, therefore I have contacted my government reps to shout about it. I suggest you do the same. I’ll be adding this little plea to all my images today—but I won’t black out.
Content is king- and if someone reading this happens to like my picture and read it, so much the better. SOPA would pretty much put me under. I post my original works to sites which sometimes include violating images- while my work doesn’t violate any copyright law, shutting those sites down because of other people’s sins would punish ME, an innocent bystander.
I also feel that there are enough and proper copyright laws right now to defend original works. If someone “steals” my image and uses it commercially, I can right now, without any additional laws, stop them. Legally. SOPA is good for huge conglomerates who don’t want competition, but would absolutely DESTROY the small, lone, artists, those of us who toil away in relative obscurity.
It will take away the venues we use to sell our original works, and it will destroy our ability to self-promote. It will make us vulnerable to any jerk that wants to take us down- and enable censorship by the few. If someone finds a work online offensive, right now, they can flag it or ignore it. Under SOPA, they could report it as a violation, and it would be immediately removed.
The burden of proof is on the person accused, not the accuser- and this is contrary to ALL previous law and statute in the US.
If you are not from the US, imagine all your US viewers GONE. Unable to see you. As well as the sites you use that are from the US- GONE.
For our sakes, and for your own, stand against this utterly stupid law. You can contact your representatives through this site:
https://action.eff.org/o/9042/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=8173
and let them know how wrong they are about what the voters want.

When I work conventions I bring a ton of art with me. And when I am done for the weekend, I pack up my gear, my banner, everything so I can find it again quickly.
Except for prints, for some reason. Those I always put in some weird flat box or folder, and then set aside when I unload and forget about them- and tonight I came across a box STUFFED with prints.
I’m putting them up in the shop just because. I forgot I had them, and if I have any left I will bring them along to my next convention- and probably pack them away after that and forget them again.
a hobo painting of a train, a heart with a skeleton key, a bloody eagle, and some flash I painted…

I do not know enough about lettering to call myself any kind of expert.
seriously. (check out some of my art with lettering in it for verification of that)
I am sometimes shaky, I am often confused by fonts, and although I have done thousands of tattoos with text in them, I still struggle with the forms and shapes. I owe the little I DO know about lettering to B.J. Betts, who is well-known in tattooing as a real expert on this stuff- he has some books out, if you are a professional tattoo artist you should keep your eyes peeled for them and buy them. (but if you work in a shop or have been around a while you already own all his stuff…)
I learned to do lettering before I ever heard of his work- the way I learned was through calligraphy, and through sign painting. A combination of those things and Betts’s work has formed my meager abilities.
Here’s a walk through on drawing this stuff. If you’re a tattooer you will naturally make the proper adjustments to the text as you go in order to make it applicable to skin, so I won’t be explaining the precise tech needed for that. If you just want to add a tattoo to a painting, a drawing, if you are not a tattoo artist you can use this how-to to make script lettering … or if you are doodling reference for your tattoo artist to build you a tattoo from, you can do this to give them an idea of what you’re after.
This is a step-by-step for script, cursive lettering in a slanted style in which the letters are connected.
I will post a separate one for block or stylized lettering next.
My tools:
Liquid acrylic ink,
fountain pen
(with round nib- just what I prefer)
colored pencil
(for beginning sketch/marking symmetry)
standard black #2 pencil
tracing paper, paper that is easy for ink lines
(I am using a scrap of srches hotpress here)
The rest of the steps, after the jump.

just some finished photos from last night’s shoot.
I took some of my own collection of oddities, and then also some of some “loaner” things from a conservation group- those I can’t post until they get theirs.
I’ll come back and update this post when I am able to post them!
in the meantime, here are a few of the images so far.

Sometimes I feel like just printing a painting isn’t enough.
I feel like- man when I buy stuff, I buy prints because I like the artist but can’t afford a bigger piece- but I always feel like it’s not as good as an original. So I end up kind of going halfway sometimes, and painting over a print of my own work.
I’ll do the painting first. here’s the original of one of these, notice that it’s yellow- I was in a sunny mood that day for some fucking reason! and next to it, the handpainted shark print, finished.
I did this in watercolor and colored pencil on plain tinted paper.
If you plan to follow along, make sure your original art has:
- strong lines without breaks
- decent contrast (high contrast is best)
- a somewhat monochromatic color scheme
further instructions after the break:
.

I get a lot of people asking me how to get started, wanting to show their art and find out if they should try to be tattoo artists.
They will ask about apprenticeships, teaching, equipment, schools, kits, “practicing at home”, “teaching themselves”, and all kinds of other stuff. I took the time a while ago to write up an article explaining how to get into tattooing the right way, how to learn without fucking people up, and how to find a decent place to learn from.
I hope this helps someone decide to go the right path to tattooing, and helps others decide it’s just not worth that much to them.
If you really are dedicated and persistent, if you really, really mean it, then you will eventually get there.
Unless you take shortcuts. Don’t take those. Do it the right way, even though it’s harder at the start.
I don’t review portfolios or teach anyone; but if you have more questions after reading this article, feel free to email me.
click the text below to read the whole article.
I’ve seen many people who are interested in learning the trade. I’ve also seen many make the mistake of trying to take a shortcut to becoming a tattoo artist at home, or as a hobby.
If you are planning to tattoo “for fun” or as a hobby, you should know that in most states this is illegal. The biggest, and most serious reason, is for the health and safety of your (potential) clients. Tattooing in a bacteria-ridden space, with unsterilized equipment, or even worse, non-disposable equipment, is extremely risky.

I have this occasional desire to go out un-tattooed.
I usually use dermablend; this time I used standard concealer that
I found at the regular dollar store,
and powder, lots of powder.
having no visible tattoos is a trip,
feels weird-
like walking around with no clothes on.

I injured the paper of this painting while working on it.
It upset me- I was attempting to paint this peachy, young, smooth perfect girl-
and tore a hole through her.
after a day of cursing and staring at the piece, I repaired it- and something more sinister came from the process.
original is for sale, you could buy it here… it was a struggle, this one.
she hides her pox; with the clever use of sticking-plaster and veils she tries to hide her sordid past. she has the flush of a consumptive and the languid eyes of a used woman. syphilis- which was the large pox…pustules and markings from syphilis were once a common mark of shame, even married women whose husbands had visited prostitutes were prone to contracting it, and then passing it on…
the world was an unpleasant place in many ways, before the discovery of antibiotics.

So I got a huge tub of soft gel medium, and immediately decided I wanted to put some of the drawings I’ve been doing (mostly figure studies) onto some cedar planks I had. I searched for a how-to, and could only find people discussing photocopies, printed photos.
Nobody seemed to be interested in putting their own drawings onto other surfaces- or if they were, they were willing to photocopy them first.
I wasn’t interested in that- I wanted to draw the piece on paper myself, in reverse, and then transfer it right to the wood.
I read up about the way gel medium works. If you’re using something that soaks into the paper, it won’t transfer. You need to be using something that sits on the surface of the paper, like prismas on tracing paper, or like inks on copy paper, or dry paints.

It’s rare that I look up to someone online as much as I look up to Jo. Her stuff is so simple, useful, and crisp that it seems almost humdrum- like the kind of stuff that OF COURSE you have in your house. OF COURSE you have a pile of these, in a drawer, for when you need to label something, or make a note, or a tag, or a gift wrapping.
They’re the kind of thing that really ought to be ubiquitous.
When I decided to actually sell my work online, I looked at most of the art venues- artfire, goodsie, zibbet, fineartamerica…ebay, amazon, and etsy. I chose etsy because it had the lowest startup costs, and because it touts itself as a haven for handmade things and arts and crafts. (I have my issues with etsy, but they’re a whole nother post)
I’ve had difficulties there, simply because I am a tattooer, and I am accustomed to not taking shit from anyone, not having to mince words or simper…and that upsets people.
Jo, and her advice and help, gave me some patience there, and made me feel like it was ok- I didn’t have to be anything there but myself.
She’s a very funny lady. And- because she knows what she’s doing, and she makes such perfect things, I look up to her.

I love taking these. I’ve made a few prints only so far- I don’t want to make too many, unless people really want them.
I know that these photos aren’t the most popular things I make- that would be the taxidermy stuff- but they’re personally among my favorite art projects, I love taking pictures of these goddamn things.
The old ral partha and grenadier toys have a deep, warm place in my heart. The late 70s and early 80s are a most nostalgic time in my life- and these detailed lead creatures were a huge part of that time for me.

these are for sale; I’m not going to be making prints of them, so when they’re gone, they’re gone.
I’m going to be doing a handful more naked ladies; I’ll post them here as they get finished.
I have some photos of an x-files themed piece I finished recently as well, but since it’s a commission I’ll post those after the person it’s for has had a chance to see it.

Formerly known as Wardian cases, moss terrariums are pretty easy to take care of, if they’re put together right.
I’ve been making these off and on for years, and have a few well-established ones growing in my house.
They’re really nice for times when you want to see some outside nature but for some reason(such as cold or work), you can’t go hiking.Since I moved to Alsea, I’ve spent a lot of time in the woods.
I live next to the Siuslaw forest, which is one of the least-developed natural areas in the northwest.
It’s gorgeous, silent, and old.
The house I live in has its own patch of woods, which is its yard. I spend a lot of my days poking around there, growing things, picking mushrooms, and gathering moss. This is what I do with all that stuff, and it’s not hard to do yourself.
(here’s a supply list, and another, and another, in case you need to buy some of these things)
