winter hare, drybrush over wet wash, 9×12"

finished work framed. prints will be available when the full series are done (four seasons)
Process photos after the jump, from start to finish.
First of a series of all four seasons of hares.
- laying in wet washes for value. I knew I wanted the only real shadows on the hare’s face, the wall, and the reeds, with minor shapes on the standing stones.
- second layer, this time in color. very limited palette for this one, just burnt sienna, hansa yellow, payne’s grey, and cobalt.
- I got way too finicky with the midground- I wanted frosty snow but it was too rough, too detailed.
- pumped up the value differences a little and started smoothing out the hummocks of snow.
- got involved in the fur for a bit. this is drybrush- VERY dry, brush.
- work area shot.
- detail of the standing stones. Yes, there’s the least tiniest spot of pure sienna on those- it looks nearly blood red against all the washy greys.
- detail shot.
- detail of drybrush.
- in frame, less glare. the frame is actually a silvery grey, I have bad lighting over here in this part of the work area. The mat is a pale grey-green.
