storm over heceta, oil on canvas 2012 I paint landscapes on site, where I see them. I take minimal things along to paint with. The most difficult part of plein air for me, is that my hands get incredibly cold, even in gloves. |
punk rock spirit, 2010, oil on canvas I like using the vertical format to paint women. I find that their personality shines through when we can see them in totality. |
longing, oil on canvas, 2009 Both of these (and most of the women I paint) are people I know, who posed for me at one time or another. All of the women I paint, with very few exceptions, are real human beings. |

The Wires, watercolor and ink on coldpress, 2009 In real life, I dislike birds. I wouldn’t hurt them, but they have such weird scaly feet that I simply don’t want to get too near to them. In painting, however, I love birds for their poise and the nearly-geometric patterns of feathers. |

taxidermy work; various bones, oil stain, preservative, ink, luthier’s glue. 2011 |
The Nine, coyote skull, cicada husks, bones, dyed feathers, red velvet in silvered frame. My taxidermy work is a very long, involved process. I use materials that might disgust or startle others. I try to tap into what the living animal might have been like, when working with these. |
