“Art is the purpose of my life. It is how I spend my time; since I was a child I have made things, drawn things, painted and glued. I firmly believe in creativity as a way of life, everyday living. I adore the extraordinary moments. The connection between death and life is the most constant theme in my art- the beauty of decay as fodder for growth.
I work every day on something. I work in many mediums, from bone to wood to paint to paper. I like to find creative uses for strange natural objects and enjoy repetition and rhythm. “
Current show: gathering
opens December 2nd, at the Oak St. Speakeasy in Eugene, OR
(show is open 5pm-2am, 21 and up: the bands Kemosabe and Dog Mage will play after ten)
Based on the work done previously in the spring show “sheanderthal”, “gathering” explores the connection between totems, animism, and environment. Original humans were not isolated from their world and did not have insulation to defend them; their world was THE world. We do not have to give up our technology to become more attuned to the world in which we live. We can seek our roots without shearing our branches.
All materials are legally harvested from roadside animal strikes, zoos, wildlife refuge and rehabilitation centers, and privately owned pets. No animals were injured or killed in order to produce this work; instead, discarded remains have been reborn in a nightmarish, deeply personal body of work which attempts to dive through the collective unconscious back to ‘caveman’ days.
The pieces are intended as meditations on the way modern culture has sanitized death (animal and human) and hearkens to a time when bare hands, soot, blood and bone were the existent artist’s material.Despite this overall appearance, the art is archival quality, with special care taken to dry and preserve the bones, whole mummified animals, and plant materials used.
“Anji Marth, the artist, is an immediatist who previously has had exhibitions of oil paintings, sculpture, drawings, and photography. She is a professional tattoo artist in Corvallis, Oregon. “
