I love Taxi Driver. I’ve watched it so many times.
Finally decided it was time for a Travis Bickle portrait.
In the end scenes of the movie, the film ratings board required the director to desaturate the scenes- the amount of blood was seen as too horrific, and pushed the movie over into an “X” rating. So they desaturated it- toned down all the colors, and darkened the film, so that the blood would have less visual impact.
I wish they hadn’t had to do that- but at the same time, that darkness and uncertainty about what is blood, what is dirt, makes as much of a statement about the character as anything else in the film. I wanted instead to emphasize the blood in this portrait. I feel that the character is very direct, very emphatic about the urge for violence. I wanted to show that.
